Sega Genesis

The Sega Genesis, released around the same time as the TurboGrafix-16, was technically a more powerful system and thanks to better marketing performed far better in the market than NEC's TurboGrafx-16. The main competition to the Genesis came a short time later with Nintendo's release of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Just like the other 16-bit systems, the Genesis featured improved visuals music and sounds and scrolling backgrounds. The controller for the Genesis featured 3 action buttons instead of the 2 buttons that were available on the NES and TurboGrafx-16.

At the time of it's release the only Sega portable system available was the Sega Gamegear, which featured its own smaller 8-bit cartridges. Several years later (towards the decline of the Genesis in the market) Sega released a portable version of the Genesis branded as the Sega Nomad.
