Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)
The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) was incredibly successful both because it featured the best possible visuals and sounds available in any of the 16-bit video game consoles, but also due to the continued excellent variety of games produced for the system, by third-party game developers like Capcom, but especially as in-house developed games by Nintendo. Games such as Super Mario World, and The Legend of Zelda a Link to the Past still hold up today as some of the greatest games ever created (and judging by the number of downloads through platforms such as Nintendo's Virtual Console, are still enjoyed by many today).
The SNES featured four six action buttons on its control pad, including two that were pressed with the left and right index fingers. This added a lot of possible button configurations for games, making games that required additional inputs (such as Street Fighter II) much easier to play. As a result Sega released a six button controller for its Genesis system shortly after the SNES release.
